【Artist Interview】Ms. Mei Zhou
今日はトロントでPMUアーティストとして活躍しているMei Zhouさんを紹介します。キャリアを始めてわずか5〜6年で、自身のアカデミーを開き、現在はTina Daivesのプロチームの一員として活動しています。この急成長に隠された彼女の想いに迫ります。

Mei Zhou
トロントを拠点とするPMUアーティスト・トレーナー。眉とアイライナーを専門とし、これらを中心にトレーニングを提供している。世界中の最高のPMUマスター（トロント、オンタリオ、ソウル、韓国、ロサンゼルス、カリフォルニア、デンバー、コロラド）から12の認定を受けている。2018年にサロンやメディカルスパ内の部屋を借りてキャリアをスタートした。2020年には自身の店舗とブティックStudio and Academyをオープンし、2021年にはSheer and Velvet Lip Blushを正式にローンチ、2023年にはTina Daviesのプロチームに加わった。
アートメイクでのキャリアを始めたきっかけとは？
Mei：アートメイクが私のような若い母親にも影響を与えられることに魅力を感じたからです。私が眉のアートメイクに出会ったのは、息子の授乳を終えた後でした。産後の疲れと抜け毛に悩まされていました。マイクロブレーディングと手動のシェーディングでコンビネーション眉の施術を試みましたが、定着が悪く、2回の施術でまだらになってしまいました。私は小さな毛穴を持つ混合肌であることもあり、より詳しく知りたくなりトロントでの最初のトレーニングに自ら申し込みました。
アートメイクを通して、一番印象に残ったエピソードは何ですか？
Mei：たくさんあります…！特に眉毛のない方が施術後にご自身の眉を見て、涙を流されたときはとてもやりがいを感じました。クライアントからアートメイクの仕上がりについてお褒めの言葉をいただき、毎朝の時間がどれだけ節約できたかを聞くのはいつもやりがいを感じます。また、生徒たちが私のトレーニングを通して経済面や私生活が変化したと教えてくれたときはとても嬉しいです。
得意分野や、普段の施術で力を入れていることは？
Mei：アイブロウ（オンブレパウダーブロウ、コレクション、ナノヘアストローク）、ソフトタッチアイライナー、シアー/ベルベットリップブラッシュに力を入れています。
アートメイクにおいて、一番大切だと思うことは何ですか？
Mei：熱心に学び、進歩し続けることです。1つのテクニックに焦点を当て、徹底的にマスターしましょう。私はマッスルメモリーを信じ、最高の結果を追求します。常にクライアントの相談にのり、過剰な期待は抱かせません。クライアントはお金を払わない最高の広告塔であり、施術が心を込めて行われたとき、友人や家族をあなたに紹介し続けるでしょう。
Next in PMU：技術だけでなく、クライアントに寄り添う誠実な姿勢が伝わってきました。自分自身がクライアントに誠実に接することで、お互いに不幸な結果にならないと思います。特にこの点は今後もアートメイク業界のマーケティングにおいても心がけたいことの一つだと思いました。
Meiさんにとって、アートメイクとは？
Mei：私にとってPMUは、若い母親たちや小さな子供を持つ女性たちへの贈り物です。女性たちは情熱と夢を追い求め、アートメイクは多くの人々の人生に深い影響を与えることができます。これはすべての女性の自然な美しさを引き出し、自信を高める手助けになります。アートメイクは他の女性起業家たちとの繋がりを生み、お互いに学び合う機会を提供してくれました。
今後の展望をぜひ教えてください！
Mei：トレーナーやマスターアーティストとして有名になり、PMUアーティスト仲間にオンライントレーニングのリソースを提供することです。

Mei：多くのものを一度に提供しようとする前に、1つのテクニックに焦点を当て、マッスルメモリーを鍛えましょう。そして、ソーシャルプラットフォームでトレンドを調査し、ソーシャルオーディエンスに注意を払い、ビジネスを成長させましょう。持続可能な価値を提供し、人々の生活に変化をもたらしましょう。

Today we present Mei Zhou, a PMU artist in Toronto. Only 5-6 years into her career, she opened her own academy and is now a member of Tina Daives’ professional team. We take a closer look at her thoughts behind this rapid growth.

Mei Zhou
She is a PMU Artist and Trainer based in Toronto, Ontario. She specializes in Brows and Eyeliner and offers training in these two main areas. She is certified 12x from some of the best PMU Masters around the world (Toronto, On, Seoul, South Korea, Los Angeles, California, and Denver, Colorado). She started the career in early 2018 as home based, then transitioned into subleasing a room inside a salon and medical spa. In 2020, she has my own space and opened up my own boutique Studio and Academy. In 2021, they have officially launched Sheer and Velvet Lip Blush. In 2023, I had the opportunity to join the Tina Davies Pro Team.
Why did you decide to pursue this career?
Mei：I was fascinated by how permanent makeup can make an impact on young mothers, like myself. I first encountered permanent makeup for brows after I weaned off my son from breastfeeding. I looked tired and had excessive hair loss from the postpartum phase. I’ve got combination brows done (Microblading and manual shading) but the retention was low with patchy healed results after two sessions. I have combination skin with small pore size. I wanted to learn more about it so I did research and signed up for my first training in Toronto, On.
What is a moment in your Permanent Makeup journey that was most memorable to you?
Mei：There are many rewarding moments; when clients teared up after seeing their brow transformation, especially for clients with no brows to having brows. It’s always rewarding to hear clients mention that they get compliments on their permanent makeup results and how much time it saves them every morning! It’s also rewarding when Students tell me how much my training made a difference in their financial and personal life!

What do you think is the most important aspect in Permanent Makeup? Why?
Mei：Be dedicated and continue to advance through education. It’s important to focus on mastering 1 technique at a time. I believe in developing muscle memories and focus on delivering the best results. Always give client consultation and set the right expectations. Clients are the best without-pay advertisement and they would continue to refer their friends and family to you when everything is done genuinely.
Next in PMU：It was not only the technique, but also the honesty with which you approach your clients. I believe that by treating clients with sincerity, there will be no unhappy results for each other. I thought this is one of the things I would like to keep in mind in marketing the PMU industry in the future.
What Does Permanent Makeup Mean to You?
Mei：PMU is my outlet to empower young women and young mothers with little children. Women can chase passion and dreams as long as you put your heart to it. Permanent makeup enhancement can impact so many lives. It helps to enhance every woman’s natural beauty and boost their confidence. Permanent makeup gave me so much opportunity to connect with other entrepreneur women and learn from one another.
Future Prospects of your career as a PMU artist and the PMU industry
Mei：Focus on 1 technique at a time to develop muscle memories before offering too many things at once.
And you should study the trend via social platforms, pay attention to the social audience to grow the business. Offer what is hot but can be long lasting to make a difference in others lives.
Message to Young Artists & Japanese PMU Artists
Mei：Spend time to master your basics before advancing to new skills. Take your time and never rush, always do your best!
