【Artist Interview】Ms. Nhung Phan
今日はベトナムからPMUアーティストのNhung Phanさんを紹介します。芸術へ興味を抱いたことをきっかけに、韓国そして世界中でメイクアップを学び、現在はベトナムにおけるアートメイクのパイオニアとして活躍しています！そんな行動力にあふれるNhung Phanさんの想いに迫ります！

Nhung Phan
韓国のMBCアカデミー美容学校での卒業後、メイクアップインストラクターとしてMBCアカデミーにて7年間勤務。ウェディングとイベントのスタジオを立ち上げ、新たにタトゥーアートとアートメイクに挑戦。PMUトレーナーとして7年間働いた後、海外で新しい技術を学び、PMUに関する世界的なカンファレンスをベトナムで初めて開催し、中心となり活躍した。現在、ベトナムでのアートメイクのパイオニアとして新しい技術を導入し、業界に新しい価値をもたらすことを目指して活動している。
アートメイクでのキャリアを始めたきっかけとは？
Nhung：Helena Rubinsteinさんの「醜い女性はいない、いるのは怠惰な女性だけだ」という言葉が好きで、すべての女性を美しくしたいという思いから始まりました。メイクアップアーティストとしてスタートし、10年間メイクアップインストラクターとして活躍した後、全く新しい表現であるタトゥーアートに魅了され、心を奪われました。
1990年代から2010年代にかけて、タトゥーはあくまで単なるものであり、PMUなんてものは存在しませんでした。伝統的なタトゥー技術を女性の顔に施したとしても、全く自然ではありませんでした。そこで私は自分のメイクアップスキルをタトゥーに応用し、人々をより美しくしたいと考えました。自身の技術向上のため、世界中のトップアーティストから数え切れないほどの教えを受け、無限の学びの旅に出ました。
12年以上この業界に身を置き、1万人以上の方を幸せにし、2,000人以上の生徒を指導することができ、今の自分をとても幸せに思っています。私はすべての女性の願いを叶えるという夢を抱き、PMUアーティストそして指導者としての使命を果たしていると信じています。
Nhungさんにとって、アートメイクとは？
Nhung：アートメイクは私の幸せの源と言っても過言ではありません。お客様のお顔を拝見し、鏡に映った新しい自分を見たときの喜びを分かち合える瞬間が楽しいです。心が弾みますね。
また、アートメイクは私にとって単なる仕事ではなくまさに人生そのものです。私は常に自分の技術を進化させる方法を考え、より良いアーティストや指導者になるために業界で進化しています。
得意分野や、普段の施術で力を入れていることは？
Nhung：ここ数年でPMU業界は大きく変化し、スカルプマイクロピグメンテーション（SMP）、パラメディカルタトゥー（傷跡のカモフラージュ、乳輪、爪など）などの新しい技術が日々登場していますが、アイブロウ、リップ、アイライナーは今でも私の得意分野です。
自分の技術を磨くために学び、努力することを惜しまないのが日課です。おそらくそれが、お客様に喜んでいただける理由のひとつでしょう。私のお客様の85％は旅行者、駐在員、海外のベトナム人であり、その大半はベトナムで私のサービスを受けるために前もって旅行を計画しなければならないのですから、身の引き締まる思いがします。彼らの美しい物語に出会い、耳を傾け、同時に彼らを美しくする機会を得ることができ、とても嬉しく思っています。
今後の展望
Nhung：私の第一目標は、PMUの情熱を他のアーティスト、特に若い世代に広めることです。Nhung Phan Brows & Lashesは、今や世界30カ国以上に生徒をもつグローバルブランドとなり、とても光栄に思っています。99.99％の生徒が美容に対する愛情は同じでも、PMUに対する愛情はほとんどなく、その「小さな」愛情が、私と一緒に学んだ後に大きく成長したのです。
パンデミックが終わった今、私はもっと多くの旅を通して、私の技術、経験、知識を世界中の学生たちと共有していきたいです。そして何より、同じようにPMUを愛する人たちに私の情熱を伝えることを大切にしたいです。
若手アーティストと日本人アーティストへのメッセージ
Nhung：「Do what you love and love what you do（自分の大好きなことをやり、自分のすることを愛しなさい）」という言葉があるように、何事にも情熱を持って取り組みましょう。他の業界と同じように、一度100％の時間と労力を費やしてやったことは、やがて素晴らしいものになるのです。ですから、もしあなたがPMUアーティストになろうと決めたのなら、自分の技術やスキルを磨くことに一生懸命になりましょう。一番難しいのは、自分の間違いを指摘し、助けてくれる師匠を見つけることです。これは陳腐に聞こえるかもしれませんが、「習うより慣れろ」なのです。
最初のうちは大変かもしれませんが、あきらめそうになったときは、なぜこの仕事を始めたのかを思い出してください。そうすれば、「努力は才能を超える」という言葉を思い出しながら、最後までやり遂げることができるはずです。
また、日本は長い歴史を有するタトゥー文化で知られていますが、2020年にタトゥーアーティストが医師免許なしで働くことが裁判所で認められました。世界中のすべてのアーティストにとって素晴らしいニュースでした。私はタトゥー業界に強いバックグラウンドを持っているので、日本でのPMUの未来に大きな期待を寄せています。
近い将来に日本を訪れて、私の技術やPMUに対する情熱を伝え、日本のアーティストから何か新しいことを学びたいと思っています。
Next in PMU：これは本当にどの職種でも言えることだと思います。大変なときこそ初心に戻り、努力できる人間になりたいですね。
そして日本に来たらぜひ技術や情熱を伝えていただきたいです。これらを伝えるだけではなく、新しいことを学びたい前向きな姿勢も大事ですね。

Nhung Phan
After graduating from MBC Academy Beauty School in Korea, worked for 7 years at MBC Academy as a makeup instructor. After establishing a wedding and event studio and trying new tattoo art and PMU, worked as a PMU trainer for 7 years, learned new techniques abroad and organized the first worldwide conference on PMU in Vietnam. Currently, she is working as a pioneer of art makeup in Vietnam to introduce new techniques and bring new value to the industry.
Why did you decide to pursue this career?
Nhung：It all started with a desire to beautify all women and my favorite quote from Helena Rubinstein goes, “There are no ugly women, only lazy ones”. Starting out as a makeup artist and becoming makeup instructor for 10 years then I was captivated and fascinated by a completely new body art expression – tattoo arts.
Back in the 1990’s to 2010’s, tattoos were just tattoos and there was no such thing as PMU (Permanent Makeup). The traditional tattoo techniques when applied on women’s faces wasn’t natural at all. That’s when I decided to apply my makeup skills to tattooing with a hope that it would enhance people’s look. I then embarked on an endless journey of learning and I took on countless classes from different lead artists around the world in order to hone my craft.
Being in the industry for over 12 years, I’m very happy to be where I am today as I’ve made over 10,000 women (men included) happy and successfully mentored over 2,000 students. I guess I am destined to be a PMU Artist / Mentor with a dream to fulfill all women’s wishes – There are certainly no ugly women.
What Does Permanent Makeup Mean to You?
Nhung：It’s safe to say that PMU is my source of happiness. I enjoy seeing the makeover on clients’ faces and share their happiness when they see their new-selves in the mirror. It just makes my heart jump.
PMU isn’t just a regular job to me, it’s technically my life. I am constantly thinking how to perfect my craft as well as evolve in the industry to become a better Artist and Mentor.
Areas of Expertise
Nhung：The PMU world has drastically changed the last few years with all new services popping up every day such as Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP), paramedical tattoos (scar camouflage, areolas, fingernail, etc.) but Eyebrows, Lips and Eyeliner are still my forte.
Not a day goes by without thinking about learning and striving to perfect my craft. This could be one of the reasons why customers prefer us to others. I am humbled to say that 85% of my clientele is tourists, expats, and overseas Vietnamese and the majority of them have to plan their trip ahead to receive the service with me in Vietnam. I am very delighted to meet and listen to their beautiful stories and at the same time, get a chance to beautify them.
Future Prospects of your career as a PMU artist and the PMU industry
Nhung：My No.1 goal is to spread the PMU passion to other artists, especially the younger generation. I’m very humbled to say that Nhung Phan Brows & Lashes is now a global brand with students located in 30+ countries around the world. 99.99% of students who came to see me shared the same love for beauty but little for PMU and that “little” love has grown massively after learning with me. Haha.
Now that the pandemic is over, I will travel more often to share my techniques, experience and knowledge with students from around the world. Most importantly, to pass on the fire in me to others who share the same love for PMU.
Message to Young Artists & Japanese PMU Artists
Nhung：Find the passion in everything you do as the saying goes, “Do what you love and love what you do”. Just like every other industry, once you’ve invested 100% of your time and effort into doing something you will eventually become really great at it. Therefore, if you’ve decided to become a PMU artist then you will have to work hard in honing your craft and skills. The hardest thing is finding the right mentor who is able to help and point out your mistakes in order to advance to the next level.
This may sound cliché but practice makes perfect – you will notice the difference once you get a hang of it. It might be tough in the beginning and whenever you’re about to give up then remember why you started this in the first place. This would allow you to stay on track and keep reminding yourself that “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard.”
Japan is notoriously known for its long history of tattoos and in 2020, tattoo artists have been approved by law to work without a medical license. Such fantastic news for not only local artists but all other artists around the world. With a strong background in the tattoo industry, I have extremely high hopes for the future of PMU in Japan. I hope I can visit Japan in the near future to share my techniques as well as passion about PMU and perhaps I can also learn something new from the local artists.
NP：I think this is really true for any job. I want to be a person who can go back to the basics and work hard in difficult times.
And when you come to Japan, I would like you to share your skills and passion with others. In addition to passing on these skills, it is also important to have a positive attitude and a desire to learn new things.
