イギリス出身のPMUアーティスト・教育者として活動し、2019年にはロンドンで「Best UK Permanent Makeup Artist」を受賞。現在もキャリアはPMUアーティスト、スピーカー、そしてトレーナーとして広がり続けている。
多くの失敗を乗り越えて広がったキャリア
Next in PMU（以下、NP）：アートメイクに興味を持った理由やアートメイクでのキャリアを始めたきっかけは何ですか？
Stefanie：PMUの仕事を始める前、私はアートとデザインの講師を務めていました。2011年に退職し、人生を変える出来事として、Facebookでアートメイクの広告を見つけました。その時、私は少し迷ったのを覚えています。新しい仕事を探していたのですが、その広告を見た瞬間、これが自分に向いていると感じました。でもこのときはこれから待ち受けている大きな試練についてはまだ知りませんでした。
最初の頃は他の新人アーティストと同じくらい自信をなくしていました。多くの失敗と学びがあり、非常に厳しい日々も経験しました。最初の2〜3年は、すべてを投げ出そうと思うこともありました。しかし、成功への唯一の道は失敗することなのだと悟りました。
新たなキャリアにすべてを投資し、アートメイクはすぐに私の情熱となりました！私は自分が一番になることを強く決意しました。そして、この意欲と熱意が世界有数のPMUアーティストの指導を受ける機会をもたらしました。彼らは私のスキルやテクニックを向上に大きく貢献してくれました。しかし最も重要なのは、私自身のメイクアップスタイルを開発し、完成させることができたことです。
現在はイギリスのバッキンガムシャーにあるエステティッククリニックで働いています。また、アイライナー、リップ、眉のテクニックを向上を目指す認定PMUアーティストのトレーニングも行っています。
私は教えることが大好きです！自分の経験や知識を共有することは、私にとって大きなやりがいです。自分の血と汗と涙を流して学んだことを通じて、誇りと感謝を抱きながら、他のアーティストにも最高のインスピレーションと力を与えたいと思っています。
Stefanieさんにとって、アートメイクとは？
NP：Stefanieさんにとってアートメイクとは何ですか？
Stefanie：PMUは最大の挑戦であり、私はアートメイクを愛しています！特にアイライナーはアートメイクの中で最も熟練したテクニックを要すると思います。目元は信じられないほどトリッキーな場所なのです。最も薄い皮膚、血管、引き伸ばしと保持が難しく、敏感で、水っぽく、無意識に動く、など難しい点があります。それは使用する顔料、針、デバイスを検討し始める前の段階でそうなのです。完璧な仕上がりを実現するためには多くの要素を正しく理解する必要があります。学ぶべきことがたくさんあるのです。毎日、私はまだまだ学び続けています！
得意分野や、普段の施術で力を入れていることは？
NP：普段の施術で力を入れていることは何ですか？
Stefanie：完璧なウィング&シェーディングアイライナーテクニックに力を入れています。私の作品は正確で洗練されており、細部にまで目が行き届くため、同業者から「アイライナー・クイーン」と呼ばれています。
未来は誰にもわからない！だからこそ学び続ける
NP：PMUアーティストとしての今後の展望を教えてください。
Stefanie：2023年はたくさんのワクワクするような機会がたくさんあります。シェーディング、ウィング、クラシックアイライナー、リップの新しいオンライントレーニングをリリースします！アメリカやカナダでの国際マスタークラスや、ヨーロッパとカナダのカンファレンスでアイライナーテクニックを発表など…！さらに多くのクラスを準備中です。その後については誰にもわかりません！
PMU業界はとても動きが速く、進化し続け、アーティストは自分のスキルを伸ばし、キャリアを向上させることができる可能性にあふれています！この業界の一員であることにとてもワクワクします。
NP：2023年は本当にワクワクする機会が多いですね！本当にこの業界は動きが早いので、どこまでもキャリアを伸ばすことができる点はとてもワクワクしますね。
若手アーティストと日本人アーティストへのメッセージ
NP：今後のアートメイク業界のさらなる発展のためにも、ぜひ若いアーティストさんへメッセージを一言いただけますか？
Stefanie：自分の進歩にだけ集中しましょう！ソーシャルメディアでは、高度に編集された写真を見て、自分の作品に自信を持てなくなることがあります。アーティストは自分の最高の作品しか投稿しないこと！成功への道のりは失敗の連続です。
そして常に誠実に仕事に取り組み、ベストを尽くしましょう。日本のPMU業界の水準を高め、成長を加速させることができます。このコミュニティの一員であることに誇りを感じられると思います。

Stefanie Toms is a multi-award winning, PMU Artist and Educator from the United Kingdom. In 2019, she was awarded ‘Best UK Permanent Makeup Artist’ in London. And since then, her career has led her across the globe as an Internationally recognised PMU Artist, Speaker & Trainer.
Failure is the path to success
Next in PMU（NP）：What made you interested in Permanent Makeup and how did you begin your career in this industry?
Stefanie：Before PMU, my background was in teaching Art & Design. After redundancy and a life changing event in 2011, I stumbled across an advertisement on Facebook for Permanent Makeup. At the time I was a little bit lost. I was looking for a new career and as soon as I saw the ad, I just knew I’d be good at it. Although, little did I know the huge challenge that awaited me!
The early part of my career was like most new artists, full of self-doubt. I made many mistakes and I had to learn a lot of lessons. Some days were so tough! There were moments in those first couple of years that I contemplated giving it all up. The only way to success is through failure, so I kept going.
Investing everything into a new career, Permanent Makeup quickly became my passion! I was so determined to be the best I could be. And it was this drive and dedication that led me to train with some of the world’s leading PMU artists. They helped me to advance my skills & techniques but most importantly, enabled me to develop and perfect my own unique style of makeup application.
I work from her aesthetic clinic in Buckinghamshire, UK. As well as working with my clients, I train accredited permanent makeup artists wanting to up-skill and refine their techniques in Eyeliner, Lips and Brows. I really love teaching! To share all the experience and knowledge I’ve had to learn through my own blood, sweat and tears is hugely rewarding for me”. Stefanie adds. I am hugely proud and grateful for my achievements and career. My passion now is to inspire and empower other artists to be the best they can be too.
What Does Permanent Makeup Mean to You?
NP：What does Permanent Makeup mean to you?
Stefanie：PMU is the biggest challenge and I LOVE it! In my opinion, eyeliner is the most skilled & technical permanent makeup procedure. The eye is incredibly tricky to work on. The thinnest skin, vascular, difficult to stretch & hold, sensitive, watery, they involuntary move etc. And that’s before you even start to consider the pigments, needles, or devices to use. You just need to get so many elements right for the magic to happen and to achieve perfect healed results. There’s just so much to learn. And every day I am still learning!
Areas of Expertise
NP：What is your main focus of treatment?
Stefanie：I’m best known for my flawless Winged & Shaded Eyeliner Techniques. My work is precise, refined and with an eye for the tiniest detail, I have acquired the title of ‘Eyeliner Queen’ by her industry peers.
No one knows the future! That's why I keep learning
NP：What are the future prospects for your career as a PMU artist?
Stefanie：I have so many exciting opportunities in 2023. I’m releasing new online training sessions in Shaded, Winged, Classic eyeliner and Lips! I have International Masterclasses in the US & Canada planned. I’m presenting my eyeliner techniques at a European and Canadian Conference and I have more world classes in the pipeline. After that, who knows!
The PMU industry is very fast moving and it’s exciting to be part of an ever evolving industry, with so much potential for artists to develop their skills and progress their careers.
NP：There are a lot of really exciting opportunities in 2023! The industry is really fast moving, so the aspect of being able to expand your career to wherever you want is very exciting.
Message to Young Artists & Japanese PMU Artists
NP：Can you give a message to young artists to further develop their role within the PMU industry?
Stefanie：Focus only on your own progress! It’s too easy with social media, to look at highly edited photos which can make you feel unconfident about your work. Remember, artists only post their best work! The journey to success is through failure!
Through always working with integrity and aiming to do your best, you will actively raise the standards and increase the growth of the Japanese PMU industry. You will feel proud to be part of this community.
