【Artist Interview】Ms. Kim Zen
Today we are publishing an interview with Kim Zen, an innovative artist in the field of PMU and esthetics! She is world-renowned for her powder brow and magnum shading techniques and is now an educator as well.

Passion for PMU
アートメイクに対する情熱
Next in PMU（以下、NP）：You are very active in the PMU industry as an artist, educator, and speaker, Kim, what made you interested in art makeup and how did you begin your career in Permanent Makeup?
Kimさんはアーティストとしても教育者、スピーカーとしてPMU業界でとても活動的ですが、アートメイクに興味を持った理由やアートメイクでのキャリアを始めたきっかけは何ですか？
Kim：When I first entered the permanent makeup industry there really wasn’t much help and guidance for artists. So when I started teaching I wanted to bridge that gap and help others learn. I also love helping people find their confidence and full potential of their natural beauty and I can do that through PMU. I found my passion through PMU as I learned to enhance the natural beauty of my clients.
私がアートメイク業界に入った時は、アーティストのためのサポートやガイダンスが本当にありませんでした。なので教え始めた時、私はそのギャップを埋め、学んでいる人たちの助けになりたいと思いました。また、人々の自然の美しさの自信と秘めた可能性を引き出すことが好きで、アートメイクを通してそれができています。クライアントの自然の美しさを強くする方法を学びながら、アートメイクに情熱を注ぎました。
NP：Your difficult experiences when you first entered the PMU industry have led you to your current career.
アートメイク業界に入りたての頃の大変だった経験が今のキャリアにつながっているんですね。

NP：You have been active in the Permanent Makeup industry for over 20 years, what does Permanent Makeup mean to you?
アートメイク業界で20年以上活躍されていますが、Kimさんにとってアートメイクとは何ですか？
Kim：It’s a powerful gift of being able to help someone change the way they look and feel because it can change their outlook and that can be life changing. I love that I’m able to express my art and help women feel more confident and beautiful in the process. I love that I can help make a difference in the industry by sharing my journey with artists and inspiring others to pursue there dreams.
アートメイクは、外見を含めて、人生や気持ちまで変える手伝いができる素晴らしいギフトです。私のアートを表現することができ、そのプロセスの中でもっと自信と美しさを女性に感じてもらうことが大好きです。他のアーティストが夢を追いかけるために私の旅をシェアし刺激することで、業界に変化をもたらす手伝いができることを嬉しく思います。
NP：Absolutely, I agree with you. I recently had my first experience with PMU and it has changed me so much more in my feelings than in my appearance.
本当に素晴らしいギフトですよね。私も最近初めてアートメイクをしましたが、外見より気持ちの方がとても変化しました。
Focus on natural effects and best results
ナチュラルな効果とベストな結果にこだわる
NP：What do you focus on in your treatment?
普段の施術で力を入れていることは何ですか？
Kim：I specialize in machine shading for eyebrows focusing on creating the most natural effects and customizing the best healed results for my clients.
クライアントのために最もナチュラルな効果とベストな結果を目指して、眉毛のマシンシェーディングに力を入れてます。
What are three things you cannot live without?
生活に欠かせない3つのものは？
NP：Besides your passion for PMU, we would love to know three things that are essential to your daily life.
アートメイクに情熱を注ぐKimさんですが、普段の生活に欠かせないもの3つをぜひ教えてください。
Kim：Things I can’t live without if it has to do with PMU. They would be tattoo machines, ink and needles. I love tattooing and studying different products and seeing how I can utilize the best for different procedures.
人生に欠かせないものはアートメイクに関係するものです。その中で必要な三つ道具はタトゥーマシンとインクとニードルです。なぜなら、私はタトゥーすることと様々な製品を知り、最適な製品を利用する方法を学ぶことが大好きだからです。
NP：In talking with you, I feel that you have a love of PMU and are very curious. You love to learn, and there will be much to learn from you.
お話を伺う中で、アートメイクが好きで好奇心旺盛なところが伝わります。学ぶことが大好きなKimさんから学べることはとてもたくさんありそうです。
Spend time with family

NP：You are very active in the Permanent make-up industry, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
アートメイク業界でとても活躍しているKimさんですが、余暇は何をして過ごしていますか？
Kim：I enjoy spending time with my son and family. I’m really trying to balance my life and career so finding free time can be challenging sometimes.
息子や家族と過ごす時間を楽しみます。生活とキャリアのバランスを意識しているので、自由な時間を見つけることが難しい時があります。
The "Influence of Beauty" by SNS and the Need to Question the Self
SNSによる「美の影響」と自己への問いかけの必要性
NP：Can you give a message to young artists for the further development of the PMU industry?
今後のアートメイク業界のさらなる発展のためにも、ぜひ若いアーティストさんへメッセージを一言いただけますか？
Kim：To have patience and never stop learning. PMU is a continuing process of practice and you can never stop learning. Understand that skin is so different with each individual and we work on a living canvas so results will always be different. In this world of how one can get influenced of what beauty should look like because of social media I believe we really have to ask yourselves “What does beauty mean to you?” and stay true to that. If you and your client are both happy with the outcome at the end, that’s a success.
忍耐と学ぶことを止めないことです。アートメイクは実践的な継続であり、学ぶことを決して辞めることはできません。皮膚には個人差があり、生きたキャンバスに色を加えるため、結果はいつも違うことを理解してください。SNSによって美の見え方が影響されやすい世の中では、「美とは何なのか」を自分自身で問う必要があると思います。そしてそれを信じ続けなければならないです。あなたとクライアントとの両方が最終的に満足できる結果になれば、それは成功です。

NP：As a final note could you give a message to Japanese PMU artists.
日本人アーティストへもメッセージをお願いします。
Kim：I want to say hello to all the Japanese PMU artists and wish everyone much success and best in their business. I am honored to be able to share with all of you and I want to inspire you to stay true to what beauty means to you.
日本のPMUアーティストの皆さん、こんにちは。そして、全員がビジネスにおいて成功しベストな状態であることを願います。全ての人と共有できることを光栄に思い、あなたが思う美の意味に忠実であり続けるために刺激を与えたいです。また、大きな影響を与え、もっと多くの世界中のアーティストの教育に関わっていきたいです。
